Germs and bacteria are all around us, and even though they are microscopic, they still significantly impact our daily lives. If you have kids at home, staying healthy presents even more of a challenge. Fortunately, there are simple things you can do to keep everyone in optimal shape.

Wash Hands Regularly

Maid services know that one of the easiest and most effective things you can do to prevent illness is regularly wash your hands. Encourage your children to do this as well! Scrubbing with soap and water is the first line of defense against germs and bacteria.

Keep it simple, enforce a hand washing policy whenever your kids return home from errands or school. Also when returning inside from playing outside or yard work.  After using the bathroom, and after spending time with friends or peers is another time for hand washing.

Outlaw Thumb Sucking and Nail Biting

It might be tough, especially if you have a thumb sucker in the family, but our fingers are one of the dirtiest, most disgusting parts of our body.

Microscopic germs and bacteria can live on the undersides of our fingernails for months on end, so if you, or one of your kids is regularly putting their fingers in their mouth, somebody is bound to get sick eventually.

Try using a disinfected pacifier instead. These are easy to clean and maintain, and don’t present as many health hazards as our fingers and finger nails do.

Disinfect Everything

If you have a maid service working for you, then you’re already covered, but if not, regularly take the time to disinfect everything. This means kitchen counters, the backs of chairs, even the inside and outside of garbage cans.

Simple disinfectant sprays are an easy way to ensure exceptionally gross or stinky areas stay under control and germ free. Are there particular toys or clothes that your kids love playing outside with, or putting in their mouths? Seek those out, and disinfect them too.

Vaccinations

Every parent is responsible for making their own decisions when it comes to vaccines, but pediatricians and health experts all agree that they can prevent illness and save lives. If your children already attend public school, then you’ve probably already taken care of this, but if not, do so as soon as possible. Vaccines are a sure fire way to protect your kids from common childhood germs and illnesses like Chicken Pox, Mumps, and Measles.

Keep it Clean

Keeping your home relatively tidy goes a long way toward protecting your family from germs and bacteria. Hiring a maid service makes this step a lot easier, but not everyone has that luxury.

It’s up to you how much effort you put into the cleaning process, but making sure the kitchen floor is free of old or moldy food is a good start. Also, make sure the toilet seat is regularly washed and disinfected (vinegar works great), and that counters where meat or poultry are cut stay clean and tidy.

No time for a full on cleaning brigade? Keep a container of disinfectant wipes on hand, that way you can wipe things down, even if you’re in a rush.

Look but Don’t Touch

Controlling germs and bacteria at home is one thing, but what about when you’re out running errands? Simply tell your kids that everything is to be looked at and not touched.

Since our hands are such harbingers of doom, it’s better to stay safe than sorry. In addition, you can bring disinfectant spray or wipes with you to keep your shopping cart or shopping basket germ free. You might also want to invest in some antibacterial hand solution.

By following these simple safety suggestions, you’ll be on your way to a healthier, more germ-free existence in no time flat.
