Halloween is coming up and Maids by Trade is very excited! Costumes, themed parties, special concerts, crazy food, and fun events make this holiday one of our favorites. Halloween also roughly marks the halfway point of fall, with September in the rearview mirror and November right around the corner. Many families and friends spend more time around the dinner table and fireplace in fall than other times of the year, and such festivities warrant a clean and suitable house for various guests. Read on for a handful of tips when preparing for Halloween.
Sweep up
Colder months bring fallen leaves, cobwebs, and small bits of dust that seem to linger for weeks at a time. Take the proactive approach against these natural occurrences by taking out your broom and giving your residence a good sweep.
This applies to both indoors and outdoors. Basements, garages, front doors, porches, and patios are most susceptible to the aforementioned natural clutter. Leaves can end up falling just about everywhere, and even then are often swept into corners. Spiders like to use banisters, guardrails, chairs, and tables to construct webs, so remain vigilant of these areas to swiftly wipe away such unwanted materials.
Rake the leaves
As the leaves begin to change colors and eventually wilt off the trees, there is nothing like a robust raking of leaves to keep your house looking fresh and clean from the outside. Being able to appreciate the final weeks of green grass will keep your yard from overflowing with leaves, and you will have less to worry about when winter arrives.
If you live somewhere other than a single-family home, making sure to keep your driveway, garage and front step free of leaves is still a great step to take. Both you and your guests will appreciate a walkway free of crunchy leaves during the Halloween season.
Check your gutters and house lining
One of the most critical steps to take while fall is still young is making sure your gutters are clean and free of gunk. Falling leaves, the occasional rain, debris from your roof, and other random substances can all combine to fill your gutters nearly to the brim. Set aside a morning or afternoon to hop up onto your roof and clean out your gutters with the help of a family member or friend. Your gutters and roof will thank you later.
Take some time to check the lining facets of your house as well. The siding, brick and other structural components of your house must be sturdy enough to last another winter. If you see any holes, cracks, missing pieces or anything that looks too worn down, it probably is. The best thing to do now is get it properly patched up or replaced, so that when harsher winds, snow, and cold temperatures come, your house does not get even more damaged. Some of the worst damage to a house can occur during or immediately after winter if a house is not protected and sealed properly.
