Checklist for Childproofing Your Home — 7-Day Challenge

Many parents worry about protecting their children from danger, abduction, and violence, but many overlook one of the biggest threats to their children’s safety and well-being in their own home. These recommendations will help you keep your baby safe at home.

Childproofing Around Your Home

— Detect hazards by getting down on your hands and knees which children can get to

— Install childproof gates at top and bottom of stairs to reduce risk of falling

— Install safety latches on appropriate cabinets, drawers, etc.

— Keep these items out of reach of children: Hazard materials, rope, string, etc.

— Place lighting where necessary to prevent falls

— Use outlet covers on all empty electrical outlets which children can reach (follow manufacturer's instructions)

— Tuck excess of electrical cords out of the way

— Shorten drape and blind cords and/or cut off the knot at the end

— Install window guards and locks where necessary

— Lower hot water heater temperature to less than 130 degrees F

Childproofing the kitchen

— Store knifes, breakables and other sharp objects out of reach

— Lock up all harsh chemicals and other cleaning products

— Keep plastic bags out of reach

— Use a stove guard to prevent burns

— Turn pot handles on stove towards the side or the wall

— Unplug appliances and cords when not in use

— Use floor mats in front of the sink and stove to prevent falls

Childproofing the bathroom

— Place rubber mats in bathtub and shower

— Keep medicines out of reach

— Lock up scissors, razors, nail clippers, and other sharp objects

— Avoid keeping cosmetics and liquids in lower cabinets

— Use safety latches in cabinets

— Unplug bathroom appliances: curling iron, blow dryer, etc.

— Never leave a baby alone in the bathtub

— Take some time to discuss safety with your toddlers
