We throw dirty clothes into the washing machine to get clean and never think we could be putting them into a place with mineral deposits and mold growth. Cleaning your washing machine takes a few easy steps and ensures your clothes are actually getting clean. No matter what type of machine you have, we know how to help you get your washer sparkling and running efficiently.

Step One

First thing you do is empty any clothes that may be in the washer. Then fill the machine with hot water and add a quart of bleach. Turn the machine on and let it run for a full cycle. If the machine still smells of bleach after the cycle is over, then refill it with hot water and run the machine again.

Step Two

Clean the dispensers by using a vinegar-water solution. Combine equal parts water and vinegar in a container of your choice.  Using the solution and a clean rag, scrub the dispensers  and clear them of any hair or miscellaneous debris.

That’s it! How easy was that? No elbow grease required for a cleaning like this. If you do not have a top loading washing machine, take a look down below on how to clean a front-loading machine. You might like reading How to Clean a Laundry Room.

Step One

Empty any clothes that may be in the washer. Mix together 1/4 baking soda with 1/4 water. Pour the baking soda and water mixture into the washing machine, then add 2 cups of vinegar. Close the lid and start a cycle using the hottest water possible.

Step Two

After the cycle is over use a clean damp sponge to wipe down the rubber around the opening of the machine. It collects a lot of dirt, grime, mold, and mildew. Make sure to wipe it thoroughly to get rid of any stuck on muck.

Changing Hoses

It is recommended to change the hoses connecting to a washing machine every 3-5 years. With age the hoses become brittle and susceptible to breakage. If one does break, it will cause a serious flood in your laundry room.

Adapt these tips to what you have on hand and your specific cleaning needs. Also, consider adding this chore to your cleaning calendar. Regular cleaning maintains your machine, prevents mineral build-up, and keeps your washer running productively.
