How to Organize a Garage, garage organizationThese garage organization tips are borderline genius! Your garage has perennially been an eyesore, but with these tips it can change—from dumping ground to actual functioning space. It’ll take a bit of effort, but the payoff will make it worthwhile. Read these tips and then go get started.

Slat Wall Hangers

Who needs shelves anymore? Save space by installing slatwall panels. The slats have two horizontal grooves in them. Hangers, hooks, and other similar hardware easily slid into the grooves of the slats. With a whole wall of these grooved slats, you have easy storage for brooms, shovels, dust pans, or even the pain-in-the-butt hose you used to trip over.

Baskets

Baskets are great for storage because they come in a huge variety of sizes and shapes. They’re also lightweight! Use baskets to store things you can’t hang, like spray paint or cleaning products (if you have young kids, the garage is sometimes a good place to hide these chemical hazards).

Peg Boards

The classic tool organizer. The holes in the board are great for small hooks and hangers from which you can hang individual tools or small shelves. Experiment with tool configurations to find the most space efficient pattern. If you want to stay organized, place all your tools on the pegboard, then outline the shape of every single tool in dark marker. This way you’ll never forget what goes where.

Keep Bikes Out of the Way

The easiest and cheapest solution is to install two hooks on the wall from which you can hang your bike by its handlebars. You can also mount on your wall a cubby with a slot for the top tube of your bike’s frame. Get creative! Anything that gets your bike standing up or hanging neatly is a solution.

Crates for Shoes

Use crates for shoe storage. If you have a no-shoe policy in your home, the garage could be a good place to store them before walking into your home. Stack the crates on top of each other to add more room for other shoes.

Garage Organization That Works

Garages fill up pretty quickly with all the things you don’t have room for elsewhere. Keep the mess under control with simple garage organization. This principle applies to any part of your home—if it’s organized, it’s going to be more accessible and look neater.
