We spend a lot of time on our mattresses, and they accumulate different kinds of oils, bodily fluids, and dust.  It’s important to clean mattresses though, as it can improve your sleep and prevent contaminants from getting on your sheets and pillow. Cleaning and maintaining your mattress is easy and will take just a few minutes. Read to find out how to get started.

How to Clean a Mattress

Remove Dust and Dirt

Vacuum the mattress at least once a week to get rid of unwanted dust and particulates. After you’ve stripped the sheets for their weekly cleaning, just go over the surface of the mattress with a vacuum attachment.

Give Your Mattress a Longer Life Span

Mattresses last longer if you flip them to the opposite side. Flip prior to putting fresh sheets back on every time you wash your bedding. This is a very simple way to double the life span of your mattress.

Disinfect

You can’t throw mattresses in the washer with some bleach, but there are other ways to keep them sanitized. Lightly spray the mattress with a disinfecting spray. This will kill bacteria on the surface as well as eliminate odor.

Remove Stains

Get rid of those gross stains by using baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. Mix together 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide and 3 tablespoons baking soda. Once it’s mixed very well, pour into a spray bottle. Spray the stain and scrub with a clean rag until the stain has lifted.

Remove Odors

Baking soda is great for eliminating odors. Sprinkle a good amount of baking soda directly on the mattress surface. Let the baking soda sit on the surface for several hours before vacuuming it up. This ensures the baking soda has time to soak up all the odor.

Protect from Stains

Protecting a mattress from stains only requires a one-time purchase. Just buy a plastic cover for your mattress to protect it from stains, dust, and other messes.

Sleep peacefully with the knowledge you’re not resting on a bed of oil, allergens, dirt, and dust mites. Light cleaning is recommended either weekly or whenever you’re removing your sheets to wash them. Keep up with these cleaning practices for a better bed, better sleep, and more productive mornings.
