How to Clean a Bathroom exhaust FanCleaning your bathroom exhaust fan may not seem like an important job, but when it plugs up and stops working, what you might find lurking under there will make you wish you hadn’t neglected it. Bathroom fans work in damp environments that can coat them with dirt, dust, and mold making them less effective and just plain gross. Like most house cleaning jobs, we don’t want to do it but it also has to get done. A functional exhaust fan draws moisture out of your bathroom, preventing mold and mildew from cropping up, and an overlooked fan can cause bathroom odor. Here’s an easy step-by-step method to help you keep that bathroom exhaust fan sparkling clean.

Step One

Pull off the fan cover, gently. There may be metal pins on each side of your fan. Squeeze the pins together to completely remove the fan cover.

Step Two

Fill your bathtub with warm water. Add a few drops of your favorite dish soap to the warm water and put the fan cover in. Let the fan soak while you continue to clean the rest of the fan.

Step Three

Looking at the fan, you will see a outlet. Unplug the the fan from the outlet. This is a very important step. You could shock yourself while cleaning if you do not unplug the fan.

Step Four

Using a screwdriver, remove any other screws or nuts that are securing the fan and motor. Remove the fan and motor from the ceiling and place it on your counter top or floor. Remember where all the screws and bolts go as you will need to replace them after the cleaning.

Step Five

Your fan may be caked with dirt, dust, and hair. This is normal if you haven’t cleaned it for awhile. Using a damp microfiber cloth, wipe down the fan blades and motor until they’re clean. If there is grime and dust on the ceiling inside you can use a vacuum to get it out. Wipe down the housing with a damp microfiber cloth.

Step Six

Replace the fan and motor. Screw in all the nuts and bolts making sure they are secure. Plug the fan back in to the outlet. Rinse, dry, and replace your fan cover.

Your Exhaust Fan is Clean!

You will see a major difference in your fan’s performance. It will run more quietly and work more productively. Cleaning your fan should be done a few times a year, and be sure to leave your fan on while taking a shower or hot bath to prevent mold and mildew.
