clean power outletYou might be surprised by the amount of dirt that can find its way behind your outlet cover or get trapped in its creases and edges. Luckily, cleaning your wall outlet is a quick and easy chore. Use our steps to get a safe and clean power outlet in just a few minutes.

Safety First

General safety tips are to never get the outlet wet and never stick a metal object in the outlet. Both these actions could result in severe shock and injury. When cleaning, locate the appropriate circuit breaker and turn off the power before cleaning, and never spray a product inside the outlet, even if you have disconnected the electricity.

Step One

Use a screwdriver to remove the screws from the face of the outlet. Set the screws to one side. You can place the outlet cover inside warm soapy water to clean it, but make sure the cover is fully dry before replacing it.

Step Two

Use a can of compressed air to blow dust out of the outlet and the surrounding area. If there is build-up on the edges of your outlet, use a cotton swab to scrub it away. Build-up could mean your outlet cover is cracked and ill-fitting. Check the outlet cover to see if it needs to be replaced.

Step Three

Once you’ve removed all the dust, checked the outlet cover for cracks, and made sure it’s completely dry, you can replace the cover. After the cover is screwed back on, all you have to do is return the power and you’re done!
