Candles add elegance and glamour to a room, but their ugly wax drippings left on surfaces definitely have the opposite effect. Check out these tips on how to remove candle wax from any surface in the home.

how to remove candle wax

Remove from a Tablecloth, Carpet, or Other Fabric

When you really want to impress at dinner, a tablecloth and candles are a given. However, that combo sometimes doesn’t work out so well for the tablecloth. If a tablecloth or some other fabric gets dripped on, start by scraping off as much wax as you can with a butter knife. Then get a brown paper bag and cut out a big enough piece to place over the wax. Grab an iron and iron the paper bag until all the wax has transferred from the fabric to the bag.

You can use paper towels rather than a paper bag if that is more convenient. Adjust your temperature depending on how delicate the fabric is. Do not leave the iron in one spot for too long as this could burn the protective layer and scorch the fabric underneath.

Once you’ve removed the wax, wash the fabric as usual.

Another Way to Remove Candle Wax from Fabric

Place the fabric in the freezer. When the wax freezes and becomes brittle, you should be able to pop it off. To remove remaining residue, stretch the affected area over a large bowl and secure with clips or a rubber band. Pour boiling water over the fabric to get out the last of the wax. Then wash as usual.

Remove from Wood Surfaces or Floors

We do not recommend scraping wood to remove wax. This can ruin the surface with scratches. Instead, grab a blow dryer and set it to medium. Aim the dryer on the wax until it starts to melt. Wipe off the runny wax with a rag and wash the wood with hot soapy water to remove any leftover residue.

Remove from Glass

This is pretty similar to wood. Avoid scraping as that can leave scratches. Get the blow dryer, set to medium, and heat the wax. When it liquefies, wipe it up with paper towels or a clean cloth. Wash the glass with soapy water and dry.
