Ready for your fun fact of the day? Faucets collect more grime and dirt than a sink basin. That’s right! Touching them after handling yucky items covers them in germs and they can be hard to clean because of their awkward shape and hard-to-reach nooks and crannies. Have no fear though, the cleaning experts are here! Take our easy tips and give your bathroom a clean faucet again.

How to Clean Faucets

Make Your Faucet Sparkle

Mix 2 tablespoons dish washing liquid with 2 cups of warm water. Soak a sponge in the mixture and scrub the faucet gently. Cover the head of an old toothbrush with baking soda and scrub the faucet. Rinse with warm water and dry.

Unclog a Faucet Aerator

The aerator is the piece that reduces splashing on the tip of the faucet. To clean it, unscrew the aerator from the faucet and remove the internal components. Scrub the aerator and screen with a toothbrush until free from debris. Be careful not to bend the screen or you will have to replace it. Reassemble the aerator and replace it on the faucet.

Clean Faucet Tough Spots

The nooks and crannies on a faucet are hard to reach. It can be hard to find a tool that will work with a faucet’s weird shape. Using dental floss is a great way to get between the cracks of the faucet. Toothbrushes and tooth picks work well, too.

Chrome Faucets

Vinegar will leave your chrome faucets shiny and naturally sanitized. Pour vinegar into a spray bottle and spray on the entire fixture. Let the vinegar sit for five to ten minutes. When done, wipe the fixture with a dry cloth.

Brass Faucets

Again, vinegar is great. In a small bowl mix 1 tablespoon of vinegar, 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour, and 1 tablespoon of salt. Mix together until well-combined. Apply the mixture to a clean cloth and wipe the fixture in a gentle buffing motion. Wipe dry with a clean cloth.

Copper Faucets

Use cola to clean copper faucets. It works wonders and makes the fixture shine. First fill a spray bottle with cola and spray the entire fixture. Let the cola sit for a couple minutes, then rinse and rub gently with a wet cloth. Dry the faucet with a clean towel and voila!

Faucet Knobs

Use warm soapy water and a sponge to wipe down the knobs. You can also use a disinfecting wipe to kill any lingering germs.

Maybe no one notices if your faucet is dirty, but they will definitely notice a clean one. A shiny clean faucet is the accessory your sink needs to make a bold statement and define the room. Be sure to clean your faucets every 3-6 months to keep bacteria away. If you don’t want to clean the faucets yourself, consider getting your local cleaning service to tackle them.
