Long gone are the days where everyone always wore hats. Most people now go bare-headed, so a hat can be a bold fashion statement or and provide an extra finishing touch for an outfit. Make sure you stand out in a good way by wearing clean hats! Use our easy tips to keep the wardrobe just for your head cool and clean.

How to Clean Hats

Straw Hat

Brush the inside and outside of the hat with a soft-bristled brush to remove loose dirt. Fill a spray bottle with equal parts hydrogen peroxide and water. Mist the straw hat with the solution and wipe with a clean cloth. Now you’re ready for sunny afternoons on a patio or working in the garden.

Felt Hat

As before, start with a soft-bristled brush to remove any loose dirt from the hat. To remove lint, wrap tape around your hand, sticky side facing out. Blot the hat with the tape until all the lint is gone. Last tip: don’t get your felt hat wet! You can clean the sweatband using a wet toothbrush, but be careful not to get any felt wet.

Baseball Caps and Visors

Like in the tips above, brush off loose dirt. Fill a sink with warm soapy water and submerge the hat in the water. Use a toothbrush to scrub the hat inside and out. Rinse the hat with clean running water, then gently dry the hat with a clean towel. When you’ve dried the hat as much as possible, place it on a hat rack so it doesn’t lose its shape.

Acrylic Hat

Check the tag. Most of these hats will be okay to throw in the washer! Just place in the washing machine along with like colors and turn the cycle to gentle or delicate. Wash as usual. You can place the hat in a mesh laundry bag to protect it while it’s in the washer. Let the hat air dry after the cycle.

Swim Cap

Okay, maybe this isn’t exactly a hat and it isn’t exactly fashionable, but you can still clean your swim cap to prolong its life. After each swim session, rinse the cap with non-chlorinated water and then place on a towel to dry. Avoid wearing metal head bands, clips, or bobby pins when wearing your swim cap as these items can puncture the cap.
